Maria Illungiayok is an Inuktitut teacher from Arviat, Nunavut of 7 years, has been performing for about 20 years and has travelled to many places, such as Ireland, England, Botswana and Belize to show Inuit culture by throat singing. Maria has studied at Nunavut Sivuniksavut in 2003-2004 where she learned to throat sing. Her passion led to being selected to perform at 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, BC at the Victory Ceremony. Maria is a strong advocate and supporter for her love of Inuit culture and language.
Patricia Pitseolak is a fourth grade teacher in Arviat, Nunavut. Passionate of her culture, she runs the after-school throat singing club to inspire students. Patricia learned to throat sing at the age of 13. Since then, she has travelled to different places to perform, such as Vancouver, Haines Junction, Hawaii, Ottawa, etc. Patricia also performed for several special occasions in her hometown for the past 10 years. Patricia has studied at Nunavut Sivuniksavut in Ottawa, and upon completing the NS program, she attended the Nunavut Teacher Education Program with Nunavut Arctic College in partnership with the Memorial University of Newfoundland in her very own community, Arviat.
