At the age of 22, Jeeka Kudluk, an Inuk from Kangirsuq (Quebec), left his familly for a two-month expedition led by a British prospector. Unprepared, they nearly died trying to find the precious minerals. This is his recollection of events.

It’s June and time for the spring seal hunt. People travel on the melting sea ice looking for cracks and breathing holes in the 24-hour daylight. Zach follows elder Louis Uttak on a family seal hunt, as he shares his expert hunting knowledge and tells stories of his past life living on the land.  

Inuit of the Igloolik region have been hunting walrus, incredibly large and sometimes dangerous animals, for thousands of years – caching and fermenting their meat for the long winter ahead. We first follow Zach on a winter hunt, as hunters venture out by snowmobile to the floe edge in search of walrus, and a more common summer hunt by boat.

BERRY PICKING
While making breakfast Kalla notices they are almost out of jam, so Ukaliq and Kalla decide to go berry picking for crowberries. Ukaliq learns that even though the berries are very tasty, if he eats as much as he picks, he won’t have any berries to make into jam.

 MAKING PITTI
Ukaliq and Kalla catch a lot of fish. Enough fish to make all sorts of delicious things, and making pitti (dried fish) is one of their favourites! Kalla tells everyone a story about how he learned how to make pitti.

 PICKING HEATHER
Ukaliq and Kalla are spending the weekend at their tent. Kalla wakes up early and decides to go for a walk and pick heather. The two make tea and bannock.

 ICE BREAKUP
Summer arrives in the arctic. Ukaliq is excited to use his snow machine one last time before the sea ice breaks apart. But Kalla informs Ukaliq that the ice has already broken up so he shouldn’t go snowmobiling. Kalla reminds Ukaliq of all the fun things there are to do during summertime.

EGG PICKING
Ukaliq and Kalla, two very different friends, decide to go egg picking that day. Kalla has been many times before so gives Ukaliq important advice about leaving some eggs to take care of the birds. But it turns out Ukaliq does not know the difference between a duck and a goose and is in for quite a surprise.

The Uluit are an all-female Inuit hockey team in Inukjuak, Nunavik. Join this remarkable group of mothers, daughters, sisters and friends, filmed over the course of one year, as they skate their way to the 2010 Whale Cup. The Uluit, in addition to being star athletes, fiercely inspire and deeply impact their community serving as teachers, midwives, students and social workers.

The Uluit are an all-female Inuit hockey team in Inukjuak, Nunavik. In Qimuksik (Dog Team) one family travels in the immense and beautiful arctic during spring. Inuaraq teaches his young son how to survive in the old way: driving the dogs, building the igloo, catching seals on the open water, running down caribou to feed the family.    

Inuaraq's family finally arrives at Avaja to a warm welcome. Yet, many changes have taken place. On the hill above the tents, they now find a wooden church and a priest. Sharing the fresh caribou feast, telling stories, Inuit are interrupted by the bell ringing. Inside the church the sermon is clear: Paul 4:22, 'Turn away from your old way of life.'

Igloolik, Fall 1945. Grandmother remembers the old way. In autumn 1945, five families build a stone house to prepare for the coming winter.

Igloolik, Fall 1945. Akkitiq wakes up to a nice day for seal hunting. The stone house is warm and comfortable. Men pack up the dog team and look for seals on the fresh ice,while women work at home. Sometimes, the squabbling of children leads to trouble among families.

Igloolik, Spring 1946. It is the season of never-ending days. Two dog teams searching the spring ice, men and boys hunting day and night. Seals are everywhere: at the breathing holes, sleeping under the warm sun. Amachlainuk has a lucky day.

Igloolik, Spring 1946. Seal pups: springtime delicacy, prized for their soft fur and tender meat. When the pups start coming out on the ice, even small children and grandmothers can hunt.

Packed up to travel, the families move slowly over the wet ice, through lakes of fresh melting snow, hunting on the way. Finding the breathing holes is a joyful game for everyone.

Igloolik, Spring 1946. Inuaraq throws his bones at the river and finds the fish swimming back and forth. Back at the tent Qulitalik sends the young men out with fish spears to try their luck. The walk up the rushing river is exciting but treacherous. Fish are hiding. It's easy to fall in.

Igloolik, Summer 1946. The distant sound of the atookatookatook, the first gas engine to arrive in Igloolik, brings a surprise visitor to Qaisut, island of the walrus hunters. Father Qaukuluk arrives to study Inuit life, to dig in the ancient ruins and to see the hunt. Young Inuit living in urban areas from coast to coast introduce themselves by telling us where they are from and where they are living now

A group of young urban Inuit tell us which schools they have attended and which they are attending now.

Young urban Inuit tell us what they think of the education system in Northern Canada compared to the south from their point of view. For many, the education system in the North is plagued with problems, but others have found positives in it that have shaped who they are.

Keeping traditions alive can be difficult when you’re hundreds of kilometers from your home. This group of young urban Inuit talk about their struggles and successes in trying to keep Inuit traditions alive in Southern Canada.

Despite not being in the area, this group of young urban Inuit have kept in touch with the latest developments of the Mary River Iron Mine. They have some reservations about what it will mean for the future of the five communities most deeply affected.

For this group of young urban Inuit, there are a lot of changes they would like to see made in the North. From greater access to education to better housing and health care they give us their thoughts on all of the ways in which life could be improved for the people of Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.

This group of Young urban Inuit know that life in the North isn’t always easy so they give a positive message to the youth of the North to let them know that life gets better and that it isn’t always going to be so hard.

Tommy Kudluk is a handyman who spends most of his time on the land. He keeps Inuit traditions alive by fishing and eating just like his ancestors did. After catching an Arctic char with a spear, he makes his wife an "ulu", a traditional knife used by Inuit women so that she can prepare the fish for the family to enjoy.
